The 2026 F1 power unit is tracked as separate regulated elements. A driver does not receive one unlimited “engine”; the FIA records the individual components that enter the driver's season pool.

Why the 2026 numbers are higher: one unit in each 2026 allocation is effectively a bonus because the new power-unit regulations debuted this season. From 2027 the standard limits drop to 3 ICE, 3 turbochargers, 2 MGU-K, 2 energy stores, 2 control-electronics units and 3 exhaust sets.

What happens if they exceed the pool? The first extra element of a type brings a 10-place grid penalty. Later additional elements of that same type bring 5-place grid penalties. Penalties at the same event are cumulative; if the total exceeds 15 grid places, the driver must start the race from the back.

F1 also restricts major gearbox-related components. The regulations call these Restricted Number Components (RNCs). Two important pools are the gearbox case/cassette and the driveline/gear-change/auxiliary components.

An extra restricted gearbox component normally produces a 5-place race-grid penalty when the additional unit is first used. The FIA identifies and seals these components so a team cannot simply rotate unlimited fresh hardware.

Why fans hear “new gearbox” without always seeing a penalty: some individual service items can be maintained or replaced under defined rules and FIA supervision. The penalty system is tied to the regulated component pools, not every nut, gear or service action.

For 2026, Formula 1 introduced full-time active aerodynamics. Both the front and rear wings can change configuration depending on where the car is on the circuit.

  • Straight Mode: the wing flaps move to a low-drag position on straights, helping top speed.
  • Corner Mode: the wings return to a higher-downforce configuration for grip in corners.
  • Recharge: energy-management behavior that helps replenish electrical energy.
  • Boost: electrical deployment available to the driver within the 2026 system.
  • Overtake Mode: an additional overtaking-related electrical deployment tool under the 2026 rules.
Important distinction: older F1 used DRS as a rear-wing overtaking aid in designated circumstances. F2 and F3 still describe their systems as DRS, while 2026 F1 uses the new active-aero and electrical-deployment framework.

On a normal 2026 Grand Prix weekend, Pirelli typically provides each driver with 13 sets of dry-weather tires: 2 hard, 3 medium and 8 soft. Intermediate and full-wet tires are also available for wet conditions.

Drivers reaching Q3 receive access to an extra soft set reserved for that purpose. In a dry Grand Prix, drivers must use at least two different slick compounds during the race.

This is why a team may deliberately protect a tire set in practice or qualifying: every fresh set can have strategic value later.

Race Strategy & Race Control Why teams pit, save tires, react to cautions and sometimes choose a slower-looking lap.

A pit stop buys fresh tires but costs significant track time. Engineers compare the expected lap-time gain from new tires against the time lost entering the pit lane, stopping, changing tires and rejoining traffic.

  • Undercut: pit earlier than a rival, use fresh-tire pace, and try to jump them when they stop.
  • Overcut: stay out longer and hope clear air, old-tire pace or traffic works in your favor.
  • Track position: at a circuit where passing is difficult, staying ahead can be worth more than having fresher tires.
  • Safety Car risk: a later caution can make a pit stop much cheaper and completely reverse the strategy.

A “slow” lap can therefore be intentional tire management, fuel saving, battery charging or preparation for a later attack.

Safety Car: the field physically gathers behind the Safety Car. Gaps between cars shrink, and the relative time cost of a pit stop can fall dramatically.

Virtual Safety Car (VSC): drivers must respect a controlled reduced pace rather than all queueing behind one physical car. Most gaps are therefore preserved more closely than under a full Safety Car.

  • Teams may pit immediately because the time loss is reduced.
  • A driver who had built a large lead can lose much of that advantage under a full Safety Car.
  • Restarts create tire-temperature, brake-temperature and overtaking challenges.
  • Drivers may weave or brake deliberately to maintain temperature before racing resumes.

Downforce is aerodynamic load that pushes the car toward the track and increases cornering grip. The cost is normally additional drag.

Dirty air is disturbed airflow behind another car. A following car can lose aerodynamic efficiency in corners, which can make the tires slide and overheat.

Slipstream/tow is the opposite benefit on a straight: the leading car punches a hole in the air, allowing the following car to experience less drag and gain speed.

That is why Monza normally rewards a lower-drag setup while a circuit with many medium/high-speed corners may reward more downforce.

Qualifying establishes starting position. Starting near the front reduces traffic, collision risk and the number of cars a driver must pass. At circuits where overtaking is difficult, qualifying can shape the entire race.

Parc ferme is the controlled rules period in which teams are restricted in how much they can alter the car between competitive sessions. The purpose is to stop teams from effectively building one setup for qualifying and a completely different car for the race.

Teams can still perform permitted maintenance and safety-related work, but changes outside the allowed rules can require a pit-lane start or other sporting consequences.

Formula 2 & Formula 3 Why the feeder categories look similar to F1, but use very different technical and sporting structures.

Formula 2 is a one-make championship: all 22 cars are built to the same Dallara specification and use the same Mecachrome power unit. That reduces the huge design-development differences seen between F1 constructors and puts more emphasis on the driver, setup and team execution.

Formula 3 is another one-make development category, but it is lower in the performance ladder than F2. All 30 cars share the same core Dallara/Mecachrome specification.

Quick Questions Short explanations for the terms you will hear repeatedly during a race weekend.

Usually to put energy into the tires and sometimes the brakes. Racing tires work within temperature windows, so drivers may weave behind a Safety Car or on an out-lap to build temperature before a restart or qualifying lap.

A driver may lift off the throttle earlier before braking, change energy-management targets or use another fuel-saving technique so the car can reach the finish or create strategic flexibility. In IndyCar, where refueling is part of normal race strategy, fuel windows can be especially important.

A stint is the portion of a race between pit stops. A team may refer to a “medium-tire stint,” a “fuel stint,” or a long/short stint depending on the race and series.

On many IndyCar road and street events, push-to-pass provides a limited strategic increase in engine performance that drivers can deploy for attacking or defending. It is different from F1's 2026 active-aero/electrical-deployment system.

Rules change. Technical and sporting regulations can be revised during or between seasons. The detailed 2026 figures above are tied to the current rules and should be reviewed when the dashboard is rebuilt for a new season.
