No doubt, you just heard the résumé of one of God’s glorified patrons: a mother. From celebrated superwomen to those starting out, nothing compares to a mother’s love, as God designs.
As we journey through God's Word this morning, on this beloved Mothers day, let us behold how the noble character of mothers is a divine gift, aligning perfectly with God's design for families in Psalm 127:3-5, Ephesians 6:1-4 and Proverbs 31. In the Gospel of John 14:13-14, we see Jesus affirming the power of faith and prayer, inspiring us to honor our mothers' legacies with gratitude and a commitment to carry their values forward. TO start us off, lets look at the Incomparable Worth of a Mother's Character.
Psalm 127:3-5 (NASB): > “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.”
Proverbs 31:10-12 (NASB) declares: "An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life."
This vivid portrait reveals a mother's true value—not in tasks accomplished or accolades earned, but in her noble character. The Hebrew *‘eshet chayil* (“woman of valor”) portrays diligence, wisdom, compassion, and reverence for God. Her worth surpasses jewels through trustworthiness and goodness, building her household where love flourishes and children thrive. This character radiates into her role as mother, creating a home where love flourishes and children thrive.
Such virtue isn't fleeting; it shapes generations. A mother's influence fosters an environment of security, where little ones learn to trust, love, and persevere. This foundational truth echoes in Ephesians 6:1-4: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."
Obedience to parents honors God, but parents—especially mothers—must nurture without provocation. Mothers impart discipline and instruction, guiding children toward wise decisions. Without this, chaos reigns; with it, lives are anchored in the Lord. To really get a better understanding of this noble character, God Himself underscores this maternal love in Isaiah 66:13: "As one whom his mother comforts, so I the Lord will comfort you." God’s tender love mirrors a mother’s embrace, truly reflecting divine care.
Consider Sarah, amid career demands and health crisis. Prioritizing her children’s growth, she said, “I’ll always make time to teach love and kindness.” Helping her son with a project, she encouraged: “Every challenge builds resilience and faith.” Her character transformed trials into testimonies.
Yet Proverbs 31 is no sinless ideal. No mother attains it in her strength—we all fall short. It is an aspiration empowered by Christ. John 14:13-14 promises: > “Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.“
Through prayer in Jesus’ name, the Spirit enables ordinary mothers to become women of valor. God seeks obedience, not perfection.
I know this truth intimately. As a child, deaf and sickly, I was truly "a handful." Yet my mother cared tirelessly. Years later, she reminded me with a smile: "You were a handful, but I loved it!" Her love knew no bounds, measuring success not by worldly standards but by faithful presence. Beloved, a mother's love defies quantification—surpassing all the world offers. It is designed in women, as God declared, that her character be something to inspired with! That alone warrants attention!
As we conclude, I like to leave you with four pillars of a Mother’s Godly Legacy; let these truths resound stronger than ever, calling us to exalt mothers on this day:
• Spiritual Nurture: Mothers, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, nurture souls as Christ nurtures the church. Motherhood is virtuous life, not mere biology.
• Self-Giving Love: God is love, exemplified maternally and supremely in Christ’s cross.
• Wisdom from Her Lips: “She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue”—God’s wisdom expels folly.
• Fear of the Lord: “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised”—kindness as grace’s law.
Women hold prominence in God’s design. Husbands, love as Christ loved.
Women—mothers or not—hold a prominent place in God's design. From charm and beauty to knowledge and strength, their love cannot be fabricated. Men, what shall we do with such wives? Ephesians 5:25 commands: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her."
Church, let us rise as one! On this Mother's Day, acclaim with me: "Mothers, you are God's masterpiece—virtuous, invaluable, and eternally blessed! To God be the glory for every noble mother among us! Amen and amen!"
