Imagine standing outside a towering fence, heart pounding, desperate for safety inside. You've tried climbing over it, digging under it, even begging the guard at the entrance—but nothing works. No key, no entry. Do you know what that reality represents? Our spiritual reality without Christ. Fences surround us everywhere—from rural fields protecting livestock to suburban yards safeguarding homes, marking boundaries and importantly, protecting what's precious. The well known Great Wall China, stretches over 13,000 miles, guarded empires from invaders for centuries, yet even with all that technology and strength in stone, brick and mortar, it couldn't stop internal decay. In America, our 620,000 miles of Western fencing could circle the Earth 75 times, born from frontier needs to protect cattle drives and homesteads during the 19th-century expansion. Today, we add electric wires, cameras, and security codes—yet entry to these protective barriers always demands credentials: a key, a passcode, or a trusted invitation. POINT: Scripture references fences, walls, hedges, and boundaries nearly 350 times, defending cities like Jerusalem, Jericho, livestock from predators, and even God's people from spiritual harm. Symbolically, Satan sneered at God's "hedge" around Job, questioning the divine protection that kept Job safe.
Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, enclosing His sheep in a protective fold. Jesus declares: > "Very truly I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep."
In first-century Judea, a sheep pen was a simple stone enclosure for safety from wild animals and thieves and bandits. The shepherd laid across the gate as the living barrier—no one entered or exited without their permission. Thieves and bandits would attempt to scale the walls unknowingly the Shepherd was alert, vigilant and ready to defend the flock. Jesus is the Gate—the sole path to abundant life. As Acts 4:12 affirms, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." I ask you today, are you knocking at His door of the gate... or scaling fences of your own making? Are you trying to make ends meet without Christ, or allowing God to provide you access to the sheep pen, inside the gate for protection, love, and eternal life?
Have you ever known people-pleasers? This fence traps millions in our approval-addicted culture. They attempt to scale the walls of the fence for prosperity and power at nearly any cost. Consider Hugh Jackman—a Hollywood star. He admitted to having a very rough childhood that left him with abandonment, insecurity and terrifying trauma. His life was fast paced and was based upon people pleasing in order to get love and affection. Fast-forward to fame: 70,000 fans screaming his name at concerts, yet he confesses a deep void. Jackman admits, "I want to please, be all things to all people," performing endlessly for love that's never enough.
Sound familiar? In our Instagram era, we climb this fence daily—chasing social media likes, workplace promotions through endless "yeses," or family affirmations that never satisfy. But these fences collapse under scrutiny. Remember the prodigal son? He squandered his inheritance on wild living—partying, women, false friends—climbing every pleasure fence but his father's. He woke up empty in a pigpen, starving amid swine, realizing his "freedom" was slavery. Only repentance led him home through the gate of grace, where the father ran to embrace him.
Jesus warns against these voices in John 10:3-5, 8 (NASB): > "To him the doorkeeper opens... the sheep listen to his voice... his own sheep by name... they follow him because they know his voice... All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them."
Thieves steal joy; voices of culture, idols, and sin promise lush pasture but deliver death. Jesus said, "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture". The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; this is Satan himself; Christ gives life—more abundantly! As Galatians 1:10 challenges, "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."
This people-pleasing fence doesn't just exhaust us; it separates us from God's purpose. Transitioning from personal approval, let's examine broader modern thieves that lure us away from the Gate.
You ever chased career ladders, thinking success secures you? Picture the Wall Street trader grinding 80-hour weeks for a multimillion bonus—penthouse views, luxury cars—yet divorced, addicted to pills, staring at an empty soul. Or the Instagram influencer, filters masking raw loneliness, validation vanishing with the next scroll. Proverbs 14:12 declares, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." These are fences without gates—thieves in disguise, echoing Ecclesiastes 2:11: "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind."
What about family legacies? "I'll make Mom proud," we vow, performing for love that's earned, not given freely. Recall the older brother in the prodigal story—faithful on the farm, yet fence-bound by resentment, refusing the feast inside grace. He climbed duty's wall, missing the father's heart. Or consider substance abuse fences: the weekend party promising escape, but chaining souls in addiction's pigpen.
Friends, we're not wired for solo journeys. Genesis 1:27 reminds us God created us in His image—for relationship with Him first. Matthew 6:19-21 warns, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Today, stop climbing. Stop chasing those dreams and fantasies that only leave you empty in the end.
Knock at Jesus' gate—He stands open. Here's how to step through:
- Listen: Whose voice guides you? Tune to the Shepherd's call through Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. Practice daily quiet time; let His voice drown out the thieves.
- Confess: Name your fences—people-pleasing, ambition, idols, addictions. Repent as in 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." He's waiting, arms open.
- Follow: Step through for salvation by grace, green pastures, and abundance. No more thieves—eternal security in the fold.
- Obey: Build accountability—share with a mentor, join a small group. Walk daily with the Shepherd.
Will you trade pigpens for pastures? Empty cheers for eternal life?
Ponder: Where are you trying to enter without Jesus? By the fence, or the gate? Abundant life awaits. Enter gate by way of Jesus, and you will never be disappointed or lost!
